Dr. Laura F. McNicholas, MD, PhD, graduated with a B.S in Pharmacy from the University of Wyoming. She then attended the University of Kentucky and received her Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1980 and her M.D. in 1988. She completed her Psychiatry residency at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship in Substance Abuse Research and Treatment through the Treatment Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania. She joined the Philadelphia VAMC in 1991 and the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1993. Dr. McNicholas directed the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment and Education for the VA from 1995-2005. She supervised the University of Pennsylvania Fellowship in Substance Abuse Research and Treatment and the Addiction Psychiatry Residency until 2005. She has extensive experience in Addiction Psychiatry both clinically and from a teaching perspective. She has served as a consultant to the FDA, FSMB and as the Consensus Chair for TIP #40, Clinical Guidelines for the Use of Buprenorphine in the Treatment of Opioid Addiction. She has received the Nyswander-Dole Award from AATOD and the Annual Award from ASAM and the Scott Mackler Award for Teaching from the University of Pennsylvania
