This workshop will provide information to help counselors integrate the assessment and treatment of co-occurring disorders into opioid treatment settings. We will focus on disorders commonly occurring in patients with OUD (e.g., depression, PTSD) and review principles for distinguishing between substance-induced symptoms and independent disorders. We will discuss several evidence-based treatments. Cultural competence/humility, barriers to care, the impact of stigma, and interdisciplinary collaboration will be highlighted. Attendee participation will be encouraged.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain 2 principles for distinguishing between substance-induced conditions and independent disorders.
  • Describe 2 evidence-based interventions relevant to treating co-occurring disorders.
  • Describe 2 aspects of cultural competence/humility in the context of co-occurring disorders.
