All too often, clinical professionals don’t realize the early warning signs of burnout and compassion fatigue until they experience a health crisis or other significant trauma. Often, we also do not realize the negative impact it can have on our clients. For those in the substance abuse treatment field, early recognition and improved self-care both in and out of the workplace are crucial to preventing vicarious traumatization, burnout and compassion fatigue. This presentation will focus on how to recognize symptoms that could lead to burnout and compassion fatigue and demonstrate effective and easy-to-implement techniques to maintain well-being.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to define the terms “vicarious trauma”, “burnout” and “compassion fatigue” and the impact on patient care.
  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to recognize the early warning signs of stress-related compassion fatigue.
  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to identify methods of self-care and strategies to prevent burnout.
