About New York City
As your hosts of the 2009 AATOD National Conference we want to insure that your time here is both enlightening and enjoyable. Whether you are coming to our city for the first time, are a regular visitor or even if you live and work here everyday, we encourage you to get out and have some truly breathtaking experiences. After all, there is no other city in the world like New York. While we don’t want you to miss some of our most outstanding landmarks and adventures, we’d also like to let you in on a few newer and perhaps lesser-known attractions in this “City That Never Sleeps.”

Staying at the Hilton New York, you will be based in the heart of this pulsating, vibrant and everchanging metropolis. You’ll be just 3 blocks from Radio City Music Hall where you can take a behind the scenes tour — walking across the same stage where the famed Rockettes kick up their heels and Luciano Pavarotti picked up his Grammy. You can explore further at Rockefeller Center (including the observation deck, the NBC television studios or by making an appearance as an audience member of the Today Show LIVE) or nearby Times Square (home of the legendary New Years Eve Ball drop).

New York’s expansive eating establishments encompass everything from grabbing a gyro or hotdog from a street vendor to world-renowned gourmet restaurants — and everything in between to satisfy any epicure all the way.

Just west of the conference hotel is Restaurant Row (46th Street between 8th & 9th Avenues) which features an endless variety of dining options with food from every corner of the globe. One standout for those who enjoy Italian food is Becco — derived from the Italian verb, beccare, to peck, nibble or savor something in a discriminating way. Becco has been operating since 1933 and is know for its acclaimed $17 pre fix lunch and $22 pre fix dinner menu that includes a large assortment of Antipasto together with tableside servings of three unlimited pastas.Other recommended Restaurant Row eateries include, B Smith’s (soul food), Firebird Russian Restaurant, Broadway Joe Steakhouse and Sushi of Gari 46.

For a fabulous taste of fine dining, head over to the Four Seasons Hotel where the celebrated French chef Joël Robuchon has opened his newest restaurant featuring a pricey yet luscious eight-course tasting menu that may include sea urchin in lobster gelée and caramelized quail stuffed with foie gras.

Of course, other neighborhoods offer great restaurants as well. Little Italy, Chinatown, South Street Seaport, Harlem, Chelsea, Tribeca, and SOHO all feature wonderful places to eat along with fascinating street life. The old Meat Packing District has been completely transformed and is probably the trendiest place in the city to eat and drink.

If shopping for that unique gift to take bring back to a loved one (and maybe for yourself along the way) is for you, just 5 blocks away, visit New York City’s newest landmark, the Time Warner Center @ Columbus Circle. With its spectacular views of the City’s Skyline and the beginning of Central Park, luxurious shops from Armani Exchange and Coach to Borders Books and Bose to Godiva Chocolatier and the United Colors of Benetton, your choices can be awe-inspiring.

Listen to the beat of world class entertainment at Jazz at Lincoln Center under the guidance of Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis. A short walk further north brings you to The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts one of the world's largest cultural complexes — home of the Metropolitan Opera House, New York City Ballet, New York Philharmonic, New York City Opera and The Juilliard School of Music. Many of New York City’s neighborhoods and landmarks are known around the world. In the Bronx and Queens, each a short one-train ride away, both World Series wining teams the Mets and Yankees will open their 2009 seasons in new stadiums. Take an exhilarating walk across the Brooklyn Bridge for the Brooklyn Museum or Botanic Garden; a free ride on the Staten Island Ferry as you view the Statute of Liberty; or tour the financial district passing Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange.

Other fascinating places of interest in Manhattan include Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Guggenheim, The Whitney, The Metropolitan Museum, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the world’s largest store — Macy’s at Herald Square.

Most visitors to NYC would not feel complete without attending a Broadway show. You might want to catch a new show like Pulitzer Prize wining August: Osage County direct from Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre. Or perhaps you’ll choose Wicked, The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera or one of the many other long running musical extravaganzas. While it’s often possible to get half-price tickets on the day of a show, tickets go fast for these Broadway Blockbusters so you may want to purchase your tickets now!

Whatever you decide don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience New York City guided by Your Hospitality Committee. — Respectfully submitted by HAYNES, 2009
